Encourage Yourself

There comes a time in our lives when we are faced with some the most toughest situations.  We experience some of the hardest trials of life that looked like it was too impossible to overcome and left us ready to give up and let go. It’s when we are in our lowest place that we expect people to be there the most but often times it’s quite the opposite and we discover that we are left to tackle this problem alone. Those who we thought we could depend on, lean on, or call on are nowhere to be found.

Similar to what happened to David in 1 Samuel 30 after he returned home he discovers everything that was important to him was either stolen or destroyed… that time where he needed to the most support is actually where he found his self feeling all alone and betrayed {his men had turned on him}.  David had to face this problem alone and though what David was going through caused him great distress he had to find a way to encourage himself.

Naturally there comes times and seasons we feel alone, down and outcast but we have to be like David and encourage yourself in the Lord for through Him is where we will find our strength, peace, and joy to endure.

People are not always going to be there but we can stand on God’s word that He will.

Deuteronomy 31:6 confirms this, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”(NIV)

There will be times when you will not find encouragement from the people you expect it from and you will have to know how to find encouragement directly from the Lord.

Discouragement will try to knock on your door and try to make you lose hope in God and even the good of humanity. DON’T LET IT IN!

Discouragement is not of God it’s the plot of the enemy and it comes when we:

Weigh the problem with our own strengthMeasure the difficulty with our own abilityMagnify your troubles more than your GodWalking by sight and not by faith

When we are able to encourage ourselves in the Lord it allows us to look beyond the present moment to the possible positive outcomes.

We can limit our victories when we focus more on the issue then we do on keeping our faith in God.  Whenever we limit our focus to the problem it can become very dispiriting but when we learn to put our hope and trust in God we see that He alone is able to deliver us out of it.

We can’t let people or the situation define how we are coming out of the storm. Our victory was won on the cross and all we have to do is continue to seek the One who has given us an eternal reward of His glory.

The presence of God will empower you to overcome your most trying times and defeat every devouring enemy.

No matter what degree of despair, grief, darkness, or hopelessness you might be in you can always look up to the hills from which comes your help. (Psalm 121)

You might be facing a difficult and trying situation in life right now and need to know how can I encourage myself in the Lord when there is nothing about our circumstance that is encouraging?

Here a few ways to encourage yourself in the Lord:

  1. Speak Life- Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose. Proverbs 18:21 MSG

2.  Prayer- Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16 NIV

  3. Get in the presence of the Lord- You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. Psalm 16:11 NLT

  4. Worship/Praise God- Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord! Psalm 117:1-2 ESV

 5. Meditate on God’s Word- Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8 NIV

 6. Fellowship with your brethen-  Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. Thessalonians 5:11 ESV

 7. Remember what God has already done- The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Psalm 126:3

No matter what you are going through or who left you hanging remember you can have victory if you keep your mind, heart, and attention towards God.
